Biography


Mungo's Hi Fi

 

Mungo's Hi Fi is a sound system based in Glasgow, Scotland which follows the original Jamaican sound systemtradition. After working together previously, Tom Tattersall and Doug Paine founded the group in 2000, writing, recording, producing and performing their own brand of reggae and dub music, working in collaboration with other artists and producers. They were joined in 2002 by Craig Macleod, in 2006 by Jerome Joly and in 2012 by James Whelan. Bringing up-to-date reggae, dub and dancehall sounds to Glasgow across the city in venues such as theGlasgow School of Art. The sound system quickly became part of a wider reggae network with a hectic schedule of live performance, both djing and as a sound system at clubs and events across the UK and Europe. The Mungo's Hi Fi sound system appears at several large festivals each year including GlastonburyWomadOutlook Festival and others.

 

Collaborations[edit]

The collaborative nature of the sound system ethos has seen Mungo's Hi Fi working with established artists such as Ranking JoeEarl SixteenSugar Minott, Soom T, Omar Perry (son of Lee Perry) and working closely with a range of up and coming UK-based vocalists and producers. Added to this various Mungo's Hi Fi tracks have appeared on notable compilations across genre such as Dubstep Allstars 2008, Rinse 2009 and Ninja Tune 2004.

Scotch Bonnet record label[edit]

The sound system founded the record label, Scotch Bonnet Records in 2005 which has put out numerous singleEP and album releases.The accessibility of this contemporary reggae label is heightened by the integral part which all new output plays to the Mungo's Hi Fi live experience, giving fans an immediate sense of the current label sound. The most recent album release 'Forward ever' in 2011 included tracks which have gained wide T.V and radio exposure. The track 'Ing' was included in the fifth series of popular Channel 4 show 'Skins'.

Mungo's at the BBC[edit]

The sound system have enjoyed a historical association with the BBC stretching back to before Scotch Bonnet was publishing the music with John PeelMary Anne Hobbs and Steve Lamacq all promoting Mungos' material in their time at BBC Radio 1. More recently support has come from legendary reggae DJ Don Letts who has featured tracks on his BBC Radio 6 Music show and the sound system have been heard across the BBC with MistaJam and Ally McCrae of BBC Introducingadding tracks from the latest album to their playlist. Stints on BBC Radio 1Xtra and support from various other radio stations have helped recent releases to sell in large number through the independent label.
